Corporate World to Me: Welcome!

February 12, 2017

I can't believe that four weeks had already passed since my first day at work (training). Those weeks had been so long yet so short at the same time. I can't believe that I can already describe this short span of time as a "roller coaster ride" when all this time I thought that these words only describe an eventful year, at the very least. I guess I was wrong.

January 16 was when it all started. After a day with the HR, we underwent Professional and Development Skills Training for a week. Would you believe it if I tell you that Ms. Ochi trained us? Yes, Ms. Ochi of 'Ochi in the City!' I'm that lucky, right? Ma'am Ochi is really great in her chosen field and I'm so glad I got to experience that firsthand. I really enjoyed our training sessions under her supervision and I think that this was one of the reasons why I stayed.

At the end of the second day with Ma'am Ochi, I felt sad and empty that I cried. I really can't put a finger on it but I guess I missed my friends, I want a normal schedule, I don't think I want this job, and it goes on and on. At one point I thought of quitting but then I decided to give it time. Ma'am Ochi probably doesn't know about this but our training with her uplifted my spirit and she inspired me in so many ways that she got me to stay. What an influencer! Thank you, Ma'am Ochi, although it is very unlikely that you are reading this.

Technical training isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I guess our tech leads are doing everything they can to make the training lighter than it actually is. Same as most of the employees, they are fun to be with and they are not hierarchy conscious. Even though they maintain professionalism among us, they are also building friendship with us. I always feel exhausted as ever after every training but I always look forward to another day with them.

Aside from technical training, we are also undergoing culture trainings from time to time.  I take these trainings as a breather from all the technical stuff I need to learn by heart. Just like any other training we are having, I am also enjoying these 'add-ons.'

To be honest, this isn't the line of job I want to be part of. This isn't even the second choice, or the third. I choose to give it a go when my friend told me that every step prepares us for something bigger. For the nth time, I don't regret hearing her words. This company and its people can make anyone believe that he/she belongs, that he/she is valuable to the company. I've been only here for four weeks but I feel valued. Seeing how well I am doing right now, I see lots of opportunities that may open in the near future. I just have to take it one step at a time and enjoy the present but also prepare for what lies ahead.

All the love,
Xeph.

    1. Hi Kathryn! Thank you so much! I should be future-oriented now since earning money isn't that easy. Even though I want to enjoy the present, preparing for the future is also essential.

  5. Congrats on your new life and welcome to the world of tax! hehe I could still remember our training days last year as well and as days go by corporate/work life is no joke and it really can't be compared to our student life. You'll really miss being a student.

    1. Thank you, Bia! I was really disappointed when I saw how much tax I paid last month! Well, welcome to adulthood. However, it doesn't end there because there are also SSS contribution, Pagibig and such. Am I ranting now? Anyways, I am still enjoying the training that's why I haven't missed student life yet. Ask me again one month after.

  8. As in si Ochi Bernadas? We actually went to the same university! Small world! I knew her kase classmate ko ata siya (or I just knew her from university kase maliit lang and UPB). Anyway, sometimes our future takes us on a different path. Somewhere we never imagined we would be. I never imagined myself working for the organization I am with because I really wanted to work at the airport when I was in college. But I am happy. I feel fulfilled in what I do so at the moment, I cannot think of doing anything other than what I am currently doing. :)

    1. Yes! I am actually referring to Ms. Ochi Bernadas. She trained us for five short days and I really learned a lot from her. It is indeed a small world.

I am glad that you are happy with what you are doing right now. I think it's rare being able to find fulfillment in what you are up to. In my case, though I am currently enjoying what I'm up to, I still can't say if it is the best path for me. Maybe it is too early to say. What I am certain about is that this company and its people can help me create a solid foundation for my career. Wish me luck!
